Prakash Kumar Karunakaran

Custodian Engineer for Advanced Process Control

Prakash Kumar Karunakaran is the Custodian Engineer for Advanced Process Control (or APC) in PETRONAS. He has been in the Oil and Gas industry for 25 years.

He started his career as an Instrumentation Engineer before transitioning to Process Engineering (Advanced Process Control) in the third largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the world (PETRONAS LNG Complex, Bintulu). While in this facility, his role included development and maintenance of complex regulatory controls for the largest aerodynamic compressors and fired equipment in Malaysia. As the first local Head of Advanced Process Control (APC), he was also responsible for initiating the development of Advanced Control applications in the LNG Complex.

After 13 years in LNG, he moved to Malaysia’s largest Crude Oil refinery (PETRONAS Penapisan (Melaka) Sdn. Bhd.) as Head, Advanced Process Control and Optimisation. He was responsible for revamping all the Advanced Solutions in this facility and for revamping the plant data acquisition system to better facilitate enhanced data analytics.

In 2000, he made another transition to Group Technical Solutions (GTS), Kuala Lumpur, a central engineering consultancy for PETRONAS Operating Units and Capital Projects. In this role, he provides consultancy for Advanced Control Solutions, Plant Data Acquisition and Advanced Analytics.

He is the PETRONAS Group Technical Authority (GTA) for all Advanced Control Solutions and for Plant Data Acquisition systems. He is also the Discipline Head for the APC discipline in PETRONAS (Skill Group 16.4).

His greatest passion is in capability building and has trained more than 700 engineers to leverage on improved Process Behavior Management© using the field of (Advanced) Process Control and data analytics.

Rashdan is currently Principal and Business Technical Authority (Instrument & Control) for PETRONAS Carigali, overseeing both Malaysia and International Assets. He is also the Team Leader for Project ORIGInS in Malaysia Assets, tasked to ensure the integrity of all safeguarding instrumentations offshore and onshore.

In PETRONAS, he has been instrumental in introducing specialized safety initiatives such as IPF Reviews and 3D Fire & Gas Mapping while in GTS, culminating with PETRONAS’ own software P-IPF and 3D FnGMap. He has also been appointed as Alternate Chairman for SIRIM Malaysia Standards focusing on adoption of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 in Malaysia.

He is now the Technical Advisor for Project PRiME, addressing PETRONAS Upstream Business needs for a predictive approach in instrument reliability & availability via Integrated Operations (IO) concept, as part of Digitalization efforts in PETRONAS. He has also been tasked to develop the Technology Inventory & Ruler for Skill Group 14 : Instrumentation & Control on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

Has total of 30 years work experience in custody metering projects, maintenance and operation of various types of plants (LNG, Refinery, Petchem, LNG/LPG terminal, utilities). Has extensive experiences in DCS, SIS, and field instrumentation with specialisation in fire and gas detection system and process analyser system. Development of Technical standard for PETRONAS Group and is Group Technical Authority for various PETRONAS Projects domestic and International. Key audit team member for GHSE audit and other technical audit across the Group. Lead trainer for instrumentation and lead coach for capability development of young Engineer. Associated external examiner for University Technology PETRONAS and lead assessor for PETRONAS professional interview assessment.

Azmi Bin Hashim

Azmi Bin Hashim

Principal Engineer, Instrument & Control

Azmi is an Instrument and Control Principal Engineer in Group Technical Solutions, PETRONAS. He leads a team performing gap assessment against PETRONAS Technical Standards on Process Control System at PETRONAS operating facilities with regards to information security. Five years prior, he served last as an Instrument Staff Engineer in a PETRONAS refinery. Throughout his 22 years of service, he has accumulated experience as a discipline auditor, competency assessor, line trainer and project engineer. Azmi gained his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, U.S.A. and is a member of Board of Engineers, Malaysia.

Sharul A Rashid

Principal Engineer, Instrument and Control

Sharul A Rashid who is the Principal Engineer, Instrument and Control in East Coast Refinery and Aromatics Plant based in Kertih, Terengganu, Malaysia, will be official Custodian Engineer, Instrument and Control effective 1st January 2019. Sharul has more than 28 years of experience in handling instrumentation and control issues in oil & gas, gas liquefaction and petrochemical plant including pipeline transmission network. Sharul advises not only within his plant site but also PETRONAS-wide on instrumentation and control issues. He involved as an instrumentation expert in many key PETRONAS projects e.g. Kertih Compressor Station, Peninsular Gas Utilisation metering stations and MLNG Satu Rejuvenation and MLNG Dua Debottlenecking.
Sharul has been sharing globally* of his valuable accumulated PETRONAS experience in IIOT & Digitalization, Cyber Security, Asset Management Excellence and Process Safety Compliance that cover smart predictive methodology (e.g. Early Warning System and wireless sensors), plant automation (e.g. Offsite Automation System Rejuvenation). *Note: Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, UAE, Oman, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Netherland, German, Turki, USA and all the way to Russia , Tatarstan and Kazakhtan.
He participated in various HSE Management System Assurance Audits throughout PETRONAS sites including Engen Refinery, Durban, South Africa. He contributed PETRONAS to develop core competency program, accelerated capability development and intensified coaching for instrument engineers and technicians – the program has been accredited by United Kingdom Institute of Measurement and Control since 2014.
Prior to joining PETRONAS, Sharul worked at MOTOROLA Semiconductor in Arizona, USA.
Sharul graduated with honors in Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Miami, Florida. He pursued Master in Engineering in University of Florida, Gainesville, USA . He is a member of the International Society of Automation (ISA), Institute of Engineering Malaysia and Board of Engineer Malaysia. He is part of review committees for IECEx & ISA 75 Control Valve Standards, and Industry Panels for University of Technology PETRONAS (UTP) & Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is TUV certified Functional Safety Engineer since 2011.

Surendran Kandasamy

Principal Engineer, Machinery Control

Surendran has a total of 16 years of experience working with PETRONAS. He started his career in 2002 as an Instrument and Controls Engineer at MTBE Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a petrochemical facility owned by PETRONAS. He subsequently moved to PETRONAS Group Technical Solutions in 2010 where he still is today serving as a Principal Engineer in the field of Machinery Control.

In his role, he provides technical consultancy to PETRONAS operating units and projects. He is a certified TUV Functional Safety Engineer and a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. His expertise and passion is predominantly in the areas of Gas Turbine Controls, Fired Equipment Safeguarding, Functional Safety Assessments and Process Control Optimization. He is also actively involved in the coaching, training and development of young engineers in PETRONAS.
